SHAKERS
TYPES OF LABORATORY SHAKERS AND PRODUCTS
AN ESSENTIAL TOOL FOR THE SCIENTIFIC LABORATORY
What type of shakers are used in the laboratory? How to choose the ideal shakers for my applications?
Shakers are used in chemistry, physics, biotechnology, microbiology, bacteriology, virology, medical diagnostics or analytical science laboratories for the cultivation of microorganisms, tissue and cell cultures and much more.
They are available in the most varied shapes, sizes and types of agitation. Are you sure you know the difference between orbiting, reciprocating, oscillating, three-dimensional or rotating motion?
In this article we will make a summary of the various types of laboratory shakers. For each type you will find links to the products we offer, among the best brands on the market, OHAUS and LAUDA.
HORIZONTAL
RECIPROCATING or alternating
Linear, bi-directional, side-to-side or front-to-back movement. They are commonly used for gentle to vigorous mixing in Erlenmeyer flasks, separatory funnels, and other containers.
Variations: Rockers, or rocker shakers, add a slight arc shape to the horizontal movement.
Used for: chemicals, in medical and biological laboratories for any mixing, gentle or vigorous.

VIBRATING
Vibrating stirrers are used in the laboratory to mix substances in test tubes (Eppendorf, flask, flask, etc.). Blending combines small amplitude (~2-3mm) with high speed.
Used for: cell lysis, digestions, extractions and emulsions.
Other types of vibratory agitators: Sieve shakers have a stack of sieves to separate solids, often used in QC (quality control) and R&D (Research & Development) applications. Vortex mixers generate tight circular motions between 100-3,200 rpm for rapid benchtop mixing or resuspension.

VERTICAL
ROCKING (Rocking) / OSCILLATING
Lateral inclination with see-saw movement. Generates a linear wave motion. It is used when an application requires a gentle rocking motion.
Used for: hybridizations, washing, staining or decolorizing slides, cell culture, DNA extraction, low-foaming agitation, mixing reagents and gels.
OHAUS
- SHRK07AL Ohaus: analog; 0-15°; 7.3kg; from 1 to 75 rpm; 1 or 2 levels.

NUTANT
It combines the motions of an orbital shaker and a rocker, creating continuous three-dimensional movement. The plane tilts from corner to corner. The rocking motion is smooth, circular waves. Provides gentle and thorough mixing without foaming.
Used for: staining/decolorizing, mixing blood samples.
ROTATIONAL
ROLLER
The tubes or bottles roll from side to side with a slight tilt up, then down.
Used for: maintenance of suspensions, tissue fixation, mixing of blood samples, solid and liquid suspensions and viscous samples.
ROTATING
'Rotisserie' style rotation (spinning). Rotary shakers rotate around an axis and function similarly to centrifuges, although they don't reach the same speeds.
Used for: mixing, blotting, hybridization and for use in temperature controlled environments.
Variations: Some models may feature angular adjustments, orbital or vibrational movement during the rotation cycle.
LAUDA
- Varioshake VS 20 OH LAUDA: digital; 360°; max. 20kg; max 20 rpm.
SPECIAL MOVEMENTS
WAVE
These models combine a horizontal and a vertical movement, combining nutante and orbital. The movement is undulating, 3D, fluid and creates little foam.
Used for: liquid samples, DNA extractions, blotting techniques and general mixing of various tube sizes.
OHAUS
- ISWV02HDG Ohaus: with incubator, analog, 0-20°, max. 2.3 kg, 1 to 30 rpm.
HAND/WRIST MOVEMENT
Simulates the effect of hand mixing; adjustments can allow you to speed up from a gentle swirl to aggressive shaking.
Used for: DNA extraction, solvent extraction and equilibration.
OSCILLATING AND ORBITAL
Shaking that combines the orbital movement with the oscillating one.
LAUDA
- Varioshake VS 15 T LAUDA: analog; 3rd; max 15kg; from 2 to 500 rpm.
